Major General Roger Schultz, Director, Army National Guard

The Washington Army National Guard sees its share of dignitaries throughout the year. But when Major General Roger Schultz, Director, Army National Guard, National Guard Bureau, visited recently and sat down with our Adjutant General, MG Lowenberg and his assistant, BG Legowik there were a total of 5 stars at the table and just shy of 100 years of military experience.  The Washington Army National Guard is poised for new growth, new relationships and new technologies.

In his role as Director MG Schultz guides the formulation, development and implementation of all programs and policies affecting the Army National Guard and its more than 362,000 members nation-wide.

The Adjutant General, Washington National Guard - Major General Timothy Lowenberg - said of the Directors visit, "It was an outstanding opportunity to talk to him about our many force structure initiatives, future roles and mission initiatives in the Washington Guard. We took the opportunity to provide him with greater detail on some long-standing issues we have."

Discussing issues

Among the topics of discussion were acquiring additional aircraft to replace some of the older models still in service with the Washington National Guard and several technology issues. The Director was shown plans for the recently approved Information Operations Group, as well as plans for computer-based training (CBT) courseware that will support the states new network of Distance Learning Centers.

Following the briefings, MG Schultz visited Fort Lewis and met with LTG James Hill, First Corps Commander. He also attended the change of command ceremony for the 1st Battalion, 33rd Armor Regiment. Under the conditions of a new program designed to foster a better understanding between the active duty and reserve component forces, a Vermont National Guardsman will be assuming command of this active duty battalion.  In a related assignment, MAJ Greg Allen, an active duty Major has already assumed command of Company A, 19th Special Forces Group, a Washington Army National Guard unit headquartered in Buckley.
